BIG WATER PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT RM100

Three years in the making, Big Water, a new album by Penny Davies and Roger Ilott, is set to enchant fans in Australia and elsewhere with fourteen thoughtful and musical tracks.
Big Water starts with one of Roger's compositions, Turn The World Around– a persuasive plea for change – and ends with the Pete Seeger classic (Roger's “all time favourite song”) Turn! Turn! Turn!' forty years old this year, with its message of inexorable change.
“There is a pleasing symmetry about the album,” Roger notes. Indeed, elemental change and a strong sense of community embrace the other tracks.
They range through the poignant story of an orchardist forced to bulldoze his trees (Pushing It Down), to the nostalgic memoir of‘Rusty Dusty Days, a reference to the band in which Roger and the bass player on this album, Jed Hudson, almost made the big time in Sydney during the 1970s.
Jed's return, along with the participation of Roger and Penny's son Jordy Davies-Ilott on drums, Dobro slide guitar and back-up vocals, mark a creative change from the duo's previous albums. “There is more orchestration and more of a folk rock feel than our previous work,” Roger observes. There are also country music touches.
As their fans have come to expect, the album, their sixteenth, is carefully crafted. “We put a lot of work into the detail of writing and production,” Penny observes. “The album changed shape many times during production and we particularly wanted to create lyrics that people would connect with.”
Penny and Roger do not preach: their songs are narratives that inform in the way that a reporter does. This is illustrated in the title track Big Water, “a hymn to our precious rivers,” that Penny and Roger wrote together.
Co-incidence was responsible for When The Cooper's Coming Down. This is a vivid poem by Max Fatchen which Roger was listening to on ABC Radio's Australia All Over one Sunday morning, thinking it would make a great song.
Unbeknownst to him, after the show Max was on the phone to the program's host, Ian McNamara, who made the same suggestion. Max said “Penny and Roger are the ones to do it”. And, by golly, they did!
